    Dear Bruce,

    I am writing this letter to thank you and your team for all of your help and support over the past 10 or so years, but more so in the past 3 years.

    As you know, it has been a very difficult time for (us), and all I can say is that Principal Edge made a very difficult situation a little easier. I didn’t realise just how much support or help that we would receive from Principal Edge. 

    I was originally sceptical when we first came to Principal Edge and we took out the recommended insurance policies, particularly those around salary continuation.  From my perspective, people take out insurance policies in the hope that you will never have to use them, and unfortunately we had to use ours--and I am thankful that over the past 3 years we had a regular income and this is due to having insurance that was recommended by Principal Edge.   At a time of personal stress, having the additional worry of financial concerns would have been unbearable.  I recall talking to the Social Worker at the hospital and she was asking about our financial situation.  I advised her that we were pretty much under control and I remember that she commented that I was the first person that she had come across all year that she didn’t have to try to find some kind of financial help and support.

    My wife was 28 at the time of a serious car accident.  We were unaware of the full repercussions and the financial impact this would have on us.  After a couple of months with only 1 stream of income, as well as the many doctors' & specialists' bill's to pay.

    Thankfully at the time of setting up our savings plan with Principal Edge my wife (who previously had no Income Protection Insurance or TPD Insurance) decided to get cover. 

    Principal Edge advised us that we could claim for reimbursement of loss of income under our insurance plan. 

    The process was very simple with Principal Edge arranging the claim forms to be sent to us, and all we did was fill them in and send them back for payments to be made. 

    The second income stream was provided and this helped cover medical expenses and doctors’ bills, as well as start to get our savings back on track. 

    We made the right decision to get the insurance. If the accident had been more serious or happened to me, we would not have been covered for many years.

  • Case Study: The value of financial advice in times of family tragedy

    In 2010 Yvonne’s1 husband Mitchell, aged 51, tragically suffered a heart attack and died soon after.

    She was left to care for her 3 children, the two eldest were studying for their university degrees, and she had a daughter aged 12. Although Mitchell had some life insurance, Yvonne was left with the prospect of re-entering the work force and / or selling the family home in order to provide adequate care for her family. Yvonne had been out of the workforce for some time and had lost confidence in her ability to obtain employment that would provide a reasonable income stream and still be flexible enough to allow her to be at home when her youngest daughter finished her school day.

    On seeking assistance from one of a Principal Edge financial advisor we identified how a combination of strategies could be introduced to solve her immediate cash flow problems.

    Specifically:

    • Yvonne re-structured her finances and settled all non-deductible debt.
    • She established a discretionary family trust with a corporate trustee.
    • She set up a loan account using the balance of the available capital which included the life insurance proceeds. 
    • Yvonne then appointed herself and her 3 children as beneficiaries of the trust.

    As two of her three children had attained the age of 18, the effect was a substantially reduced income tax liability and a highly tax efficient investment income stream for the foreseeable future.

    The result of removing the cash flow stress and delaying significant financial and lifestyle decisions was pivotal in Yvonne getting back on her feet during a time of personal crisis. In fact returning to work and selling the family home was now optional, and in the meantime the family lifestyle income needs were met.

    More importantly, Yvonne can now afford the time to care for her young daughter and will use the time to re-train and re-build her confidence for any future employment opportunities that come her way.

  • Case Study: The value of protecting you and your family’s future is key to sound financial planning.

    Elroy1 is a long standing client of Principal Edge. While he was happy to hold adequate life cover to protect his wife and young family, he often engaged in debates as to the relevance and need for trauma (or serious illness) cover. His business was profitable, he was in good health and he simply could not see the need for the additional cover.

    In 2009 during his annual planning review, the discussion once again moved to the lack of trauma protection in his portfolio. Elroy once again engaged in his regular banter. Our advisor put it like this… “Elroy, if you suffer a trauma, do you want to lose your home or your mortgage”. This obviously struck a chord with our client and something changed in his demeanour. A plan was put together to protect both his family and his business.

    In 2011 he was diagnosed with skin cancer. Fortunately his operation was a success and the damage confined to one of his shoulders. Although he will undergo regular medical check-ups, the prognosis is fairly positive. 

    The total trauma cover of $1,000,000 not only settled his home loan it  covered all of his medical expenses, home nursing during his recovery, and allowed his business to continue profitably without him during his 4 month convalescence.

    The inclusion of the buy back option will now allow him to purchase additional term life cover at standard rates later this year up to $1,000,000. Without this feature, any future life cover would have been refused or so heavily loaded that it would not have been viable.

    Now his family are truly protected for the longer term, his business remains in-tact and he is back at work. 
    Elroy is now one of our best advocates for trauma protection and having a comprehensive personal risk portfolio to protect you, your loved ones and your business against some of the great unknowns of life.

    The plan we developed gave him options that he may otherwise not have had. Rather than working out how he is going to repay his home loan, he is busy identifying his next holiday destination! He has a different outlook on life and the time he spends at work can now be reduced.
